First Communion Ceremonies
Masses celebrating First Holy Communions are parish based. The Bishop’s Conference recommend First Communions take place as part of the Sunday Mass with their fellow parishioners.
The only reason children celebrate First Holy Communion is to introduce them to the wonderful gift of the Eucharist which should be at the center of our lives and to impress upon them its tremendous significance. It is also their first step into participating more fully in their faith community.
The emphasis of our First Holy Communion Masses will be on helping the children and their families to appreciate more fully the importance of the celebration and how integral their involvement and participation in our parish community is.
With this in mind, following discussion at our Parish Council and with our teachers in our Schools and some parents, it has been proposed that First Communion ceremonies could take place on Sunday next year in April/May.
At the Last Supper, Jesus shared bread and wine with his disciples and said: “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” (Luke 22:19). In this moment Jesus gave himself to his followers and invited them to remember him whenever they gathered for this sacred meal.
Each time we celebrate Mass and receive Holy Communion, we are united with Christ and with one another as members of the Church.
For children preparing to receive First Holy Communion, this is a special step in their journey of faith as they encounter Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time.
