A note from Moorechurch Cemetery Committee

It was brought to our attention (Moorechurch Cemetery Committee), during the second week of August, that in the years prior to the establishment of the present Committee, at the request of the owners Meath County Council, a number of graves were allocated by the then gravedigger which had already contained previous burials.

This situation naturally causes great distress and anguish for families when they come to avail of their allocated plot. The matter has caused considerable concern and upset for those directly affected and the present Committee.

To help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, we strongly recommend that all families who have been allocated a grave, prior to the establishment of the current committee, have their plot checked.

If you require any guidance or assistance in checking your plot, please contact the Committee (moorechurchcemetery@gmail.com), who did not allocate existing previous plots, only new plots which were needed post April 2023.

One of the earliest recorded burials in Moorechurch Graveyard took place as far back as 1597, that of Dame Janet Sarsfield. At that time, and for many years afterwards, the practice was generally to mark a grave with a simple stone positioned at the head of the plot.

As a result, some older graves may not be clearly identifiable or may not have the same type of permanent markings that are familiar to us today.

We appreciate that this is a sensitive and concerning matter for families.

The Committee is committed to working with those affected and to doing everything possible to provide clarity and help avoid similar situations in the future.
