Dedication of the Lateran Basillica 9th November 2025

Sunday 9 November 2025

Published 10 November 2025

Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, the oldest and highest ranking of the four major basilicas in Rome.

The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the diocese of Rome, the official ecclesiastical seat of the Holy Father, the Bishop of Rome, not St. Peter's Basilica as so many mistakenly believe.

The Basilica is also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John Baptist. In ancient Rome this was the church where everyone was baptised. It is the oldest church in the West, built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324.

The dedication serves as a reminder that we are not simply individual churches ‘that do our own thing’ but rather that our local parish life serves as part of a greater unity that is the one body of Christ. We are to remember that it is not about our parish is better than another parish, or our local church is preferable to that Roman basilica; it is about remembering that we are called to live the life we were baptised into our unity as God’s building through our faith in Christ. With our Christ-foundation, we are called to exhibit this faith in our fellowship with one another in our worship: it is who we are and who we hope to become.

Sacraments

  • Baptism

We would like to sincerely thank all the Parents and Godparents who attended our Baptism Preparation Meetings for their child/children during the year.

These gatherings are a beautiful part of the preparation. They help families reflect prayerfully on the Sacrament, and they contribute to a warm and respectful atmosphere on the day of Baptism itself.

We also extend heartfelt thanks to our wonderful Baptism Preparation Team. Your generosity, dedication, and commitment are deeply appreciated. You guide families with such care as they take this important step in their faith journey. Thank you for the time you give and the witness you share.

If you wish to register your child for Baptism in 2026, please contact our parish office.

  • First Communion & Confirmation

Children in our First Communion and Confirmation classes have been presented with a lovely book titled ‘The Mass for Children’. Parents are encouraged to take a few moments to look through the booklet. Our teachers will use this book with the children as they prepare for the Sacraments next year.

Church Car Parks

Unfortunately, we are experiencing some anti-social behaviour and the selling of illegal substances, in both our Church Car Parks.

We would like to assure parishioners that this activity is being monitored. The Gardaí have been notified and given the CCTV footage from our security cameras.

Please report any unwelcome activity to Gardaí.

November

November is a time for remembering and praying for our loved ones who have gone before us and whose loss we feel. It is a time when we are particularly conscious of those in our parish who are grieving and all those who have lost loved ones, especially in the past year.

We mark this time of year in our parish with events like the celebration of remembrance Mass.

A sacred space/garden has been created within both churches. This sacred space will be in the sanctuary area, and it will be left in place until the end of November.

List of the Dead

In November we add our loved ones to the List of the Dead in our Parish.

List of the Dead envelopes are available beside the newsletters at the entrance/exit doors. They are also available in your yearly box of envelopes.

All who are named on the Parish List of the Dead will be remembered at all Masses during November and the two masses each First Friday. All are invited to attend these masses on the First Fridays at 10am St. Mary’s and 7:30 pm in St. Patrick’s.

You can return your List of the Dead Envelope in any of the boxes provided in both churches. For security, please leave envelopes during Mass times only. You can also drop them into the Parish.

November Memorial Mass

Our Annual Parish Memorial Mass will take place at the Vigil Mass next Saturday, 15th November.

Families who lost loved ones during the year are invited to participate in this Mass.

The Theme of our Mass this year is – “We are all walking each other home…”

At the Mass each family is invited to bring a pair of shoes/footwear and place them, with a candle (which will be supplied) at the front of the Altar in our November garden.

These items of footwear represent your loved one who has gone before us — and the journey we all share, and will share again.

Please invite friends and family, or anyone you know who has lost a loved one to come along.

Pastoral Letter from Bishop Tom

Bishop Tom has provided a Pastoral Letter to be distributed throughout the Diocese this weekend.

In his Letter, Bishop Tom speaks about the future of our Parish and our Diocese.

A parish is far more than a building or a boundary. It is the community of faith where we are evangelised, where the sacraments are lived, and where we grow together as disciples of Jesus. Today, with fewer priests and changing population patterns, no parish can exist in isolation. Parishes must work together in their Pastoral Areas, sharing responsibility for the mission of the Gospel and supporting one another to ensure Sunday Eucharist, faith formation, and vibrant community life. The future of our parishes will depend not only on clergy, but on every baptised person rediscovering their vocation as missionary disciples. May the Holy Spirit guide us in renewing our parishes as true communities of faith, hope and love.

A copy of the Pastoral Letter is available beside our Parish Bulletin.

If you wish to receive a copy via e-mail please contact our office.
